Stug III (Sd Kfz 142) – Sturmgeschützabteilung 197

I now finished a project I had on the shelf for quite some time. It is a Stug III with the short barrelled L/24 gun. The vehicle is from 1./ Sturmgeschützabteilung 197, which took part in the Barbarossa campaign. It later turned into Schwere Panzerjägerabteilung 653.

The kit is from Dragon, with a Aber PE set added. I also added two figures from Panzer Art, and on the base I put three figures from a Stalingrad set I also had for quite some time. They have very nice poses, but miss some of the fine details for example Alpine offerings exhibit.

The scene was a bit uninspired unfortunately, the idea with the fence being run over results from a photograph.

WSS Grenadiers Eastern Front 1944

I bought a Russian cart quite some time ago, originally the idea was to add it to the Nashorn scene. But it turned out so nicely after I painted it, that I did not like the idea of covering a lot of it again under snow. And it did not really fit into the scene, so I thought for something else.

I now finally made use of the cart, adding two dead Soviet soldiers from a Stalingrad figure set, as well as two WSS Grenadiers from Alpine.

With the remaining figures of the Stalingrad set, I made a small vignette.

Untersturmfuehrer 8 SS Cavalry Division “Florian Geyer”

Quite some time ago I bought a German soldier riding a horse from Masterclub. I started painting the horse, but left it unfinished for quite some time. Recently, I took the horse out of the shelf and finished painting.

The original rider was not the best figure out there, therefore I replaced the upper half with an Alpine SS reconnaissance officer, to depict an SS officer from the “Florian Geyer” division.

Katiusha rocket launcher BM-13 on Studebaker US6

As a side project, I built one of the iconic vehicles of WW2, a Russian BM-13 rocket launcher mounted on a Studebaker US6 lend-lease truck. The kit is from ICM, I added some PE from a set for the conventional US6 truck from Voyager, and completely rebuilt the cradle of the rocket launcher unit from scratch, using reference photos as guidance. I also replaced the sheets that cover the driver’s cabin and the front window with scratch built brass parts, which look much more in scale compared to the parts from the kit. I finally added two Russian soldiers.

Opel Blitz – second build

From the Panzerwerfer and Maultier builds I had a lot of parts for a standard Opel truck left over, so I decided to redo the Rasputiza scene. I finished the new Opel truck, and added it to the base, together with one of the original figures and the original driver. As war-time pictures usually show many soldiers trying to move trucks out of the mud again, there will remain many more figures to be added…

Finished

After quite some time I finished the little Nebelwerfer scene. Building the launcher itself was fun, as the kit is very good, although sometimes a bit tricky to assemble. The Verlinden figures were a bit weak, so I added some volume to the clothing using Magicsculp. Now they look much more like wearing German winter uniforms. The third figure lifting up the launcher grenade is scratchbuilt. The heads are from Hornet.
